The decline of the Knights of Malta wasn't a sudden collapse, but a slow process where the values that built Valletta were traded for status and power. This tour explores how the legendary Order eventually moved away from its humble origins toward a life of luxury. By the 1700s, the strict rules that defined the city began to fade. The vow of poverty was replaced by the massive gold-leafed palaces and grand churches you see throughout Valletta today. Chastity often took a backseat to high-society parties and the scandals of illegitimate children, while military discipline turned into a series of internal power struggles. You will see how the heroes of the Great Siege transformed into a wealthy aristocracy, leaving behind a city that was as beautiful as it was scandalous.
Join this tour led by our expert guides and the Grand Masters themselves. Reimagined as a digital experience, we will make use of an app that allows you to chat with these historical figures and ask them anything you like through an easy-to-use interface.
The tour is around an hour and a half long and stops at five different stops in Valletta. At each stop, the Tour guide will be inviting participants through a QR code to chat with different historical figures that include Jean De La Vallette (Valletta’s Founder and arguably the greatest Grandmaster in Malta), Jean de La Cassiere, Grand Master Verdalle, Grand Master Pinto and the artist Caravaggio, the man behind Chiaroscuro one of the most celebrated artists during the renaissance period.
At the end of the tour, participants will be invited to complete a short survey. We appreciate any feedback on this experience as we work to build the next generation of walking tours.
